Equine Exercises for Optimal Health & Performance: Backing Uphill

Writer's picture: Heather UHeather U

Backing the horse uphill is one of my go-to ground pole exercises as it offers multiple benefits all through one simple exercise. Exercises with your horse aren't just for rehabilitation; they're great for bonding with your horse, preventing injuries, strengthening and conditioning your horse, and help your horse build his confidence.

This exercise, illustrated here, works well in-hand or under saddle. However, if your horse has been injured or is recovering from a condition such as EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis), it is always best to consult with your veterinarian in conjunction with a qualified equine muscle therapist, prior to beginning any exercise program.

Backing uphill requires a high-level of proprioceptive and balancing activity. This exercise also strengthens pelvic limb muscles as the horse resists shifts in the center of gravity toward the forehand.

Benefits (with consistency) include:

  •  Improve coordination

  •  Rehabilitate stifles and hocks

  •  Engage back and pelvis (hind end muscles)

  •  Strengthen core muscles

  •  Improve proprioception

  •  Helpful to EPM recovery

  •  Helpful to kissing spine

  •  Helpful for pushy horses or those who resist walking on lead rope.

  •  Improves balance

  •  Improves overall posture
